The story of NT Momineen
NT Momineen Incorporated (NTMI) began with a simple purpose: to create a home for the Shia Muslim community in the Northern Territory. What started as a small group of families coming together for religious gatherings has grown into a vibrant, diverse community of more than 150 people.
In 2016, the first joint congregation between Shia families in the NT — and NTMI's very first majalis, held in a family home. Regular programs continued, with visiting scholars invited to lead recitations and guide the growing community. Despite COVID lockdowns, the community came together for its first majalis with over 100 members attending.
NT Momineen Incorporated was formally established in 2021, with regular Muharram and Ramadan programs beginning. In following year, Juloos processions began, marking the community's first public commemoration in the Northern Territory.
Asked to vacate our original premises, the community relocated to a second rented space to keep programs running.
The NT Government accepted our proposal of land for the Al Zahra Community Centre. NTMI and Pakistan Association of the N.T.(PANTA) organised Voice of Harmony - Information session to connect islamic communities in NT with message of Islam. Kids Madrasa is started in 2026 with their parents permission for kids over 4 years.
